My resignation immaterial to Wuogon probe – IGP

February 14, 2019February 14, 2019Emmanuel Kumi1392 views

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, has said he cannot influence the ongoing investigation into the violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on 31 January 2019 or any other ongoing investigation in the country and, so, has shrugged off calls for his resignation.

Some national security operatives fired gunshots into the crowd that had gathered at the private residence of the NDC candidate at La-Bawaleshie during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Sixteen supporters of the NDC were injured while other unarmed civilians were beaten up by the balaclava-clad security men.

The party’s Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George was also slapped in the melee.

The government has set up a three-member Commission of Inquiry to investigate the shooting incident.

The Commission began its work on Monday, 11 February 2019 but the main opposition NDC, as well as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, demanded the IGP’s resignation for investigations to be conducted.

Reacting to this call at a media encounter on Thursday, 14 February 2019, Mr Asante-Apeatu said: “I don’t think my resignation or my being the IGP can influence any investigations in this country…”

“Investigations cannot be influenced by me as the IGP,” he stressed.

Abraham Lincoln is credited for stating that, democracy is a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” The importance of democracy, the institutionalization of the various forms of freedoms, rest on the people of any country. The people define, shape and drive a democracy but in Ghana and most parts of Africa, the people are taken for granted, given no voice and their plights linger on—from one corner to the other.
