Police inaction against ‘untouchable’ Ken Agyapong shocking – Ampaw

Law Lecturer, Dr Maurice Ampaw has lamented over the country’s security services, especially the Police failure to deal ruthlessly with maverick politician and MP for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong even when it’s clear that he has flouted the law.

Describing the situation as shocking, Ken Agyapong said the security services ‘fear’ of the financier of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has resulted in emboldening the legislator to continue in his recklessness which often constitutes a national security threat.

Dr. Maurice Apaw was speaking on Kasapa FM Thursday following the killing of a key investigative journalist of the renowned Tiger Eye PI investigative firm, who Ken Agyapong had earlier urged the public to assault whenever they see him.

Ahmed Husein, who had undertaken several sting operations with ace undercover Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was gunned down by assailants on motorbike Wednesday night while in his car Wednesday night.

He’s said to have been shot three times, twice in the chest and another in the neck.

Ahmed was one of Tiger Eye investigators who had his picture circulated by Ken Agyapong in his ‘who watches the watchman’ anti-Anas video documentary and called on the public to deal ruthlessly with him whenever they came into contact with him, while promising monitory reward for the perpetrators.

Dr. Maurice Ampaw expressed his shock that the country has over the years been overly lenient with Ken Agyapong, adding that if the MP had been dealt with earlier Ahmed could possibly still be alive.

“I’m even shocked that as a nation the IGP, the National Security, the President of the Republic of Ghana, the NPP fraternity, the elders in it looked on for Ken Agyapong to make that statement without no one cautioning him. Nobody invited him to tell him that what he’s done amounted to inciting certain people against Ahmed and it may lead to crime being committed, hence we’re investigating you for such utterances which is a criminal offence so go back and retract that statement. If we had done that to Ken Agyapong we wouldn’t have witnessed Ahmed’s death today. So if someone is linking his utterances to what has happened it is justifiable in law.”

Abraham Lincoln is credited for stating that, democracy is a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” The importance of democracy, the institutionalization of the various forms of freedoms, rest on the people of any country. The people define, shape and drive a democracy but in Ghana and most parts of Africa, the people are taken for granted, given no voice and their plights linger on—from one corner to the other.
