Salaga Youth Set Ablaze NPP Office: 7 Suspects Arrested – Police
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yussif Tanko says seven (7 ) persons have been arrested at Salaga for causing violence in the area.
He says the persons arrested are currently in the custody of the Northern Regional Police command and are assisting investigations.
According to him, calm has been restored but they are still monitoring the situation at the moment.
Some youth of Salaga in the newly created Savannah Region were on rampage yesterday (Tuesday), setting ablaze the offices of the New Patriotic Party in the town to protest the announcement of Damongo as the regional capital.
Billboards within Salaga bearing photographs of President Nana Akufo-Addo have all been pulled down by the angry protesting youth who threatened to storm the residence of the East Gonja Chief Executive to burn down his residence, as well as the District Assembly Office.
“But calm has been restored in the area and we are expecting that the residents of the area will assist the police in the investigations,” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi.
Speaking on PeaceFM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, he explained that the rampaging youth were protesting the announcement of Damango as the Regional capital of the newly created Savannah Region.
“Enough men have been sent to Salaga to beef up the security in the region,” he said.
The youth claimed Salaga is the only NPP seat in the whole of the Gonjaland, hence the President should have made the town the regional capital for the Savannah Region as a reward for voting NPP.
